HFML-FELIX is a renowned national research institute, located in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. Our high-field magnets and free-electron lasers enable scientists from all over the world to expose matter to extreme conditions and drive it into previously inaccessible states and phases. We are also the only lab in the world where these two techniques can be combined, making it a unique research facility.
About us
HFML-FELIX
Our experiments contribute to a number of research fields, including medicine, astronomy, material science and the energy transition. For instance by enabling the early detection of diseases, revealing the secrets of interstellar atmospheres, or finding and studying novel materials with promising new characteristics like graphene.
As an NWO research institute we are part of a large national collaboration, consisting of seven Dutch universities and NWO-I. You can read more about our partners here.

Mission
The mission of HFML-FELIX comprises three strongly intertwined main pillars guiding our efforts:
Innovate: develop high field magnets, infrared/THz free electron laser sources and related instrumentation
Discover: a leading in-house research program with a broad research portfolio
Operate: an international, open-access user facility
